Ambientato in Scozia, ad Edimburgo, il film non è un’apologia della droga ma una condanna allo stile di vita borghese e perbenista. I quattro protagonisti: Sick boy, Renton, Spud ed appunto Begbie vogliono fuggire dal solito, dalle lavatrici, dagli apriscatole elettrici, dai telequiz rimbambenti e ammazza-cervello, e dall’atmosfera asfissiante della Scozia, che come dice McGregor, non ha trovato “neanche una cultura decente da cui farsi colonizzare”.
