Il telefilm è basato in parte sull’omonimo libro firmato da Candance Bushnell, a sua volta tratto dalla sua rubrica sul New York Observer Carrie Bradshaw è l’alter-ego dell’autrice che, per motivi di privacy, ha creato una donna che svolgeva lo stesso lavoro e aveva le sue stesse iniziali, CB. La serie si guadagnò subito l’apprezzamento sia della critica sia del pubblico, colpiti da un prodotto televisivo in cui per la prima volta «le donne parlano di sesso come gli uomini». Protagonisti della serie sono anche la città di New York e gli abiti firmati delle protagonisti, prime su tutte le mitiche scarpe Manolo Blahnick, che devono molto della loro fama alla serie. Nel corso delle stagioni le quattro amiche esploreranno il mondo del sesso e dell’amore con sfondo la sfavillante Manhattan fino a trovare ognuna la propria strada nella vita e l’amore vero.
