Guccini è uno dei musicisti e cantautori italiani più importanti e noti. Il suo debutto ufficiale risale al 1967 con l’LP Folk Beat n1: nella sua carriera ultraquarantennale ha pubblicato oltre venti album. È anche scrittore e sporadicamente attore, autore di colonne sonore e di fumetti; si occupa inoltre di lessicologia, lessicografia, glottologia, dialettologia, etimologia, traduzione, teatro ed è autore di canzoni per altri interpreti. È ritenuto uno degli esponenti di spicco della scuola dei cantautori italiani, i testi dei suoi brani vengono spesso assimilati a componimenti poetici, denotando una familiarità con l’uso del verso tale da costituire materia di insegnamento nelle scuole come esempio di poeta contemporaneo. Oltre all’apprezzamento della critica, Guccini riscontra un vasto seguito popolare, venendo considerato da alcuni il cantautore “simbolo”, a cavallo di tre generazioni. Fino alla metà degli anni 80 ha insegnato lingua italiana al Dickinson College, scuola off-campus, a Bologna, dell’Università della Pennsylvania.
